New Year…Same Seva

After a slow few weeks over the Christmas and New Year period, we have seen this week continue with that trend on this cold Wednesday evening.

We have just returned from serving over 20+ meals and offered pizza and chips to those who required a meal.

As usual, we provided a wide selection of soft drinks, water, chocolates and crisps.

We have seen an increase number of questions from individuals enquiring why we do this Seva, we choose to provide this seva to give back to those in need and it is more than appreciated by those individuals.

Another Seva…

Today marked our 38th week of providing meals to the homeless and less fortunate.

This evening our team of volunteers set up at the usual location and were able to serve meals to 45+ individuals. Prepared by our volunteers shortly before distributing  we were able to provide a vegetarian roast dinner which included roasted potatoes, carrots, parsnips and vegetarian sausages with gravy. Additionally, we offered crisps, chocolates, cakes, hot tea and coffee.

We were also joined by a local Christian group this evening, Swindon Ward Young Men who helped serve the prepared meals and prepared the hot drinks.

We would like to thank all volunteers who helped this evening, a special thanks to Simran and Harpal who prepared this evenings hot meal.

Over the last week or so, we have seen reports of certain Gurdwaras (Sikh Temples) refusing to provide access to volunteers to prepare food for the homeless. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee at Swindon Gurdwara who have continue to provide us access to the kitchen each Wednesday to prepare the food.

Another Wednesday, another Seva completed

On this cold Wednesday evening, Swindon Sikh Seva Society attended as usual and offered something slightly different than the usual hot meal. This week, we were able to offer a hot meal in the form of vegetable rice and daal.

We were visited by regulars who each week continue to thank us for our efforts as well as members of the public who did not necessarily require a meal but took time to speak to us to find out who we are and why we were providing this Seva.

We were able distribute over 30 hot meals this week which were freshly prepared shortly before setting up.

A special thanks to the volunteers who to took the time out to provide this weeks donations as well prepare the meals.

Our Seva continues

On this cold winter’s evening our team have just returned from completing this weeks Seva. We found that as the temperature has dropped, certain individuals are finding it harder and as such were greatly appreciative of the hot meal and our Seva.

This week we offered pizza and chips and found a large quantity of people waiting for us when we set up. Additionally, some of our volunteers provided woolly gloves for anyone who required it as well as offering tea and coffee to warm up.

We would like to thank those volunteers who have provided donations this week and continue to support our Seva.

Returning from our weekly Seva, we found tonight to be particularly cold and wet but yet we were still able provide over 25 hot meals to those individuals who required it.

We met some new visitors this week who took time out to ask questions about what we do and why. Each week we continuously hear positive feedback of our Seva and how greatly it is appreciated. Messages like this inspires us to keep our Seva going each week as it is now the time of the year where it is most needed.

Preparing For colder times

We have seen a drop in temperatures this week and this is the time of the year where our Seva will be most required. With this in mind, we have now purchased a hot water dispenser which will allow us to provide hot tea and coffee as well as hot food.Today being our first week of providing hot teas and coffees we found the response to be extremely positive and we are now in place to continue with this each week.

New Faces…

Having completed this evenings Seva, we noticed a lot of new faces as well as some regulars.

With the new faces, we explained what we do and why. As each week progresses we find that the message is spreading with a handful of people waiting for our arrival .

This week, we served freshly cooked pasta, prepared by volunteers just minutes before we attended our usual location to distribute. Our volunteers were able to visit key areas and provided meals to who individuals who were unable to come to us.

Some visitors were concerned that during the colder months, we would not attend. We tried our to reassure them that we will continue to provide this Seva each Wednesday.

Stocked Up

This week our volunteers took time out to purchase supplies for the weeks ahead. The founding members of Swindon Sikh Seva Society all got together and donated funds which allowed us to purchase enough pasta, drinks etc to last for the several weeks.

Although the nights are getting colder and darker, we are still seeing a positive response to our Seva. This evening we offered fresh pizza as our hot meal and found the response to be extremely positive.

Once again we would like to thank those individuals who have provided food donations. They are appreciated and will be used in the weeks ahead.
